BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Crews have installed gates on some local roads to improve the county’s flood response.

Whatcom County Public Works will install temporary road closure gates on roadways that frequently need to be closed during flooding events.

Two gates will be installed on Slater Road near where it intersects with the main channel of the Nooksack River.

Two more will be on Marine Drive near Lummi Shore Drive.

Gates will remain open unless flooding causes unsafe conditions, at which point the county will use them to quickly close the road to traffic.
