BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Travelling on a state ferry will soon cost some passengers a bit extra.

Washington State Ferries says that beginning March 1, any purchase made with debit or credit cards will have a 3% surcharge tacked to the final total.

That includes ticket purchases, on-board costs, and no-show fees. The change is due to new state legislation passed last year, which requires the surcharge to make up for transaction fees to credit card companies.

Riders can skip the new surcharge by paying with cash or using prepaid ORCA cards to make purchases.
