WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Mount Baker Ski Area’s premier event of the year has been postponed.

The ski area announced that it’s pushing the 37th Legendary Banked Slalom back to February 2027.

Ski area spokesperson Gwyn Howat says the racecourse in the Natural Halfpipe currently has an “unworkable snowpack.”

“Two weeks ago, we were really on track to have a great Banked Slalom racecourse, because the pipe was filling in nice and had great shape to it and all that.,” Howat said in a video posted to the event website. “And then, that weather pattern called the atmospheric river showed up, that was about 10 days ago, and, quite frankly, it washed a good portion of what we really needed for this year’s course away.”

Luckily, Howat says the rest of the mountain has held up quite well through the weather pattern.

Everyone who has already registered for the event will have an automatic spot in next year’s race.

Howat also says they plan to push back the event dates to give the organizers more leeway. It will now take place on Feb. 19-21 in 2027.

The annual Legendary Banked Slalom started out with 16 racers in 1985 and now welcomes over 400 riders from around the world along with competitors from right here in Whatcom County.
