BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Lowered speed limits could be coming to Bellingham streets in the near future.

KGMI previously reported the city was evaluating speed limits throughout the city late last year.

The city’s Transportation Commission voted unanimously to endorse the Speed Limit Ordinance on Tuesday night.

A three-year plan would start with lowering non-arterial roads to be 20 mph rather than 25 mph, such as neighborhood roads and downtown.

Signs would be posted at Bellingham city limits that say all roads will have “20 mph speed limits unless posted otherwise” starting this summer.

Bellingham Public Works spokesperson Connor Haron said ahead of the vote the department will work to educate the public through workshops and campaigns:

“As we roll out this first stage of the implementation plan, which is focused on those default changes and the 20 mph in the downtown corridor, we’re going to be focusing on a ’20 is plenty’ campaigns starting this summer,” he said.

From there, city officials will engage community members on changing other speed limits throughout Bellingham.

The current plan wants to drop speed limits by 5 mph in Bellingham, with some exceptions.

This plan now heads to city council for discussion and approval.
