BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Bellingham man is in custody after police say he stabbed a random person with a pocketknife.

Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy tells My Bellingham Now that officers responded to a report of a stabbing near a residence in north Bellingham just before 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30.

They learned that the suspect, identified as a 25-year-old man, had sexually harassed someone he lived with before pulling out his pocketknife in a threatening manner. The victim ran outside and towards two people who were walking their dog to ask for help.

The man chased after them and stabbed one of the passersby in the shoulder, leaving a minor laceration. The initial victim kept running and was able to hide until police arrived.

The man, who authorities believe was under the influence of drugs, continued to run away before getting into his car and crashing it near the intersection of Cordata and Bakerview.

Despite having no visible injuries, he was taken to the hospital before being booked into the Whatcom County Jail, where he remains without bail.
