SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Local authorities may have found an explanation for the string of dead canines found near Guemes Island.

The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday, April 10, that the animals involved are believed to be foxes. The agency says it’s contacted the individual associated with the incidents, and that they’re cooperating with the investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office says it does not expect to refer any charges to the prosecutor’s office given the current facts and circumstances.

My Bellingham Now previously reported that at least 20 suspected canine carcasses were found on the shores of Guemes Island beginning in late March.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the animals originated from a farm outside of Washington and were transported into the state for use in commercial fishing operations.

Their investigation remains ongoing.
