BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Consumers are beginning to see the effects of record diesel prices across the state.

According to AAA, the average price of diesel fuel is setting new all-time highs every day in both Whatcom County and Washington.

It stands at $6.76 cents per gallon in the county as of Friday, April 10.

Diesel is the main fuel that powers the country’s freight system and comes as the trucking industry’s second-largest expense after labor.

The Washington Trucking Associations (WTA) warns the continued increases will likely drive consumer prices even higher moving forward.

“Diesel prices are not following the same downward trend as gasoline, and that disconnect matters,” said Sheri Call, president and CEO of WTA. “Trucking runs on diesel, and when those costs stay high, it impacts everything—from the cost of goods to the stability of small businesses across our state.”

Some of that was seen when Alaska Airlines announced on Thursday, April 9, that it’s increasing its fees for checked baggage, attributing the rise to the volatility in fuel prices. Starting Friday, April 10, Alaska will increase its checked baggage fee by $5 for the first bag and $10 for the second bag.

Other major U.S. carriers have also increased their checked bag fees, including Delta, United, American and Southwest Airlines.
