OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington state has earned a legal victory that will protect several federal agencies from being eliminated.

A federal judge ruled on Friday that the Trump administration cannot cut four agencies that provide hundreds of millions of dollars for programs in every state.

The agencies support a range of public services, from libraries and workers’ rights to minority-owned business and homelessness aid.

“Today’s victory means that Washingtonians will continue to benefit from the work these agencies do to support our libraries, protect workers’ rights, and promote minority-owned businesses,” AG Brown said. “It also reaffirms that the President can’t reverse the will of the people and their elected representatives with the stroke of a pen.”

My Bellingham Now previously reported that Washington joined 20 other states in suing the administration in March over its plan to eliminate the agencies.

The court ruled that the president cannot override Congress’s decision to establish the services in question.

Friday’s ruling permanently bars the agencies from being cut.
