FERNDALE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A new program in Ferndale has police officers handing out financial aid to those in need.
Ferndale Police announced this week that they’re partnering Kennewick-based nonprofit BlueBridge Alliance for a community assistance program.
Officers will carry preloaded debit cards that link to a community-supported fund.
The cards, which contain $50 to $100 per person, can be used for urgent needs such as food, clothing, fuel, temporary shelter, transportation, or essential medications.
“Law enforcement officers regularly encounter people who are struggling but may not need enforcement action — they simply need a helping hand,” said Ferndale Police Chief Matt Huffman. “The BlueBridge program gives our officers a practical tool to respond with compassion and provide real, immediate support when it can make the greatest difference.”
The program will be funded through a mix of donations from businesses, community organizations and individuals.
It was jumpstarted by a $10,000 contribution from the Phillips 66 Ferndale Refinery.
The department says it hopes the program will strengthen its relationship with the community, while improving officer morale through positive interactions.
