WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – As locals start to head up to the North Cascades for hiking, there are a few forest road closures to be aware of.

The Mount Baker Ranger District will be closing a two mile stretch of Baker Lake Road (FSR 11) to all users including pedestrian traffic from July 15 through the end of August. A spokesperson for the Mount Baker Ranger Station told My Bellingham Now this closure allows the forest service to repair a currently collapsing bridge on the road.

As a result, the Baker River Trailhead will be closed and hikers should access Baker Lake Trail from the South Trailhead.

A little closer to home, Glacier Creek Road (FSR 39) is closed through the end of October at mile post 3. The spokesperson added that this closure will allow crews to do washout repairs from flooding damage in December 2025.

For hikers looking to access Heliotrope and other trailheads there: pedestrians, bicycles and e-bikes will be allowed through that closure at Forest Service discretion.

The U.S. Forest Service has a full list of forest road closures in our area.
