WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Prices at the pump have stabilized in Whatcom County over the past week.

AAA reports that the average gallon of regular gas in the county costs $5.34 as of Wednesday, April 15.

That’s exactly the same as where it sat a week ago.

Meanwhile, diesel prices have slightly leveled off, sitting roughly the same as last week. They’re still just two cents under the all-time high of $6.76 that was set on Friday.

GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan says the relief has largely stemmed from President Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire in Iran.

But he warns that the recent breakdown in talks and renewed escalation in the Strait of Hormuz will likely drive gas prices back up.

“The move toward a full blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is compounding global supply concerns and risks further disrupting flows, which pushed oil prices sharply higher in Sunday night [April 12) trading,” De Haan said. “As a result, gasoline prices are likely to jump again this week, with diesel expected to follow, until there is a meaningful restoration of shipping through the Strait.”
