BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham’s newest pier is closed after large sinkholes appeared at its entrance.

The city’s Parks and Recreation dept made the announcement via social media that Little Squalicum Pier is closed until further notice early Wednesday afternoon.

Large sinkholes appeared in the gravel at the entrance to the pier early that morning.

Officials believe the high tides from over the weekend coupled with wave action caused the damage.

Chain-link fence and warning signs will be at the pier’s entrance until the structure is safe for the public once more.
