WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Skiers and snowboarders only have a few more chances to get one last run in.

Mount Baker Ski Area says Sunday, April 19, will be its last day of operation before closing for the season. It’s closed through Thursday before reopening Friday for closing weekend.

Ski Area Events Manager Nicole Evans says their last weekend of the season looks to have a promising start.

“There’s a fair chance for about 12 to 18 inches of snow between Tuesday and Thursday, so Friday – when we open for our final week of operations for the season – it could be a powder day, so check your favorite forecast,” Evans said in a video posted to the ski area’s website.

This weekend will bring a briefer season than normal to a close after a low snowpack and closures on the Mount Baker Highway forced the ski area to push its opening to late December.

The Northwest Avalanche Center is continuing to issue a high avalanche advisory, noting very dangerous backcountry conditions.

A winter storm watch remains in effect for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit counties, including Mount Baker, through 11 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
