WHIDBEY ISLAND, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A new exhibit seeks to honor a famous orca and tell her story two years after her death.

The Langley Whale Center on Whidbey Island will open a new interactive exhibit titled “Toki’s Legacy” on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Tokitae, also known as Lolita and Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut, was from the Southern Resident orca population’s L-pod and survived 53 years in captivity before her death in 2023.

Members of the Lummi Nation fought furiously for her release from the Miami Seaquarium but she died unexpectedly before she could be returned to the Salish Sea.

According to Orca Network, Toki’s Legacy allows visitors to explore all aspects of Tokitae’s family, life and home water and has artifacts from her 1970 capture in Penn Cove.

Admission is free to the whale center, and it is open year-round.
