Mariners News
A key Mariner is making his long-awaited return to the mound today in Philadelphia. Bryce Miller is getting the start for Game 2 against the Phillies in his first game back with Seattle since June 6.
The Mariners are hungry for a win after dropping their third straight game yesterday in a 12-7 loss to Philly. Logan Gilbert gave up six runs in the second inning and the M’s crept back thanks to a three-run homer by Cole Young in the seventh to put them within three. But the Phillies responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning and Seattle’s three-run rally in the ninth wasn’t enough to avoid the loss.
The M’s now sit in a three-way tie with the Yankees and Red Sox for all three wild card spots in the American League. They’re trying to separate themselves from the pack and even their series against Philly in Miller’s return.
First pitch for Game 2 is at 3:45 on KPUG.
Another key Mariner just suffered a major setback in his return to the team. The MLB announced today that it’s suspending outfielder Victor Robles 10 games and fining him for throwing a bat at a minor league pitcher on Sunday.
Robles was nearly hit by a pitch during a game with Triple-A Tacoma when he picked up the bat and threw it in the pitcher’s direction, earning him an immediate ejection. He had been hit by a pitch three times in his previous four games with the Rainiers.
The suspension will take effect on the first day Robles returns to the Mariners’ active roster. He’s still working his way back after dislocating his shoulder in April.
Seahawks News
The Seahawks’ defense could be getting a big boost in time for their opener. The team announced that edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu passed his physical on Sunday, clearing his way to get back on the practice field.
The 28-year-old has been on the physically unable to perform list while working his way back from offseason knee surgery.
Coach Mike Macdonald says it’s too early to know his availability for Week 1, but says Nwosu is expected to be ready “around the start of the season.”
Storm News
The Storm are hoping to put their recent woes behind them tonight against the Chicago Sky.
Seattle is in the midst of its worst stretch of the season, having lost seven of its last eight games. They’ve dipped below .500 on the season after owning one of the best records in the WNBA just weeks ago.
Tonight could be an opportune time to bounce back though, as the Sky are in an even worse slump, having lost 12 of their last 13 games. Their game tips off at 5:00 from Chicago.
Reign News
The Reign fumbled a big lead and played the Chicago Stars 3-3 draw last night.
Seattle scored three highlight-reel goals to take a 3-0 lead, including a bicycle kick from Jordyn Huitema. But the Stars scored a pair of late goals before netting the equalizer in the 99th minute.
It was Chicago goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who scored her first National Women’s Soccer League goal in the final moments of stoppage time to help the Stars tie the game. She’s just the third goalkeeper to score a goal in league history.
The Reign will look to bounce back on the road this Sunday against the Houston Dash.
Youth Sports News
Washington’s representative at the Little League World Series is playing in a win-or-go-home game tonight.
The Bonney Lake team bounced back from a loss on Friday to beat New England 3-2 in an elimination game on Sunday. They’re now facing the Midwest team from Sioux Falls, South Dakota tonight with a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.
It’s a double-elimination tournament, so the team can’t afford another loss.
Tonight’s game begins at 7:00 and is being televised on ESPN.
