SAMISH ISLAND, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Puget Sound Energy (PSE) will be testing out some new environmentally friendly technology on Samish Island next week.

They will be installing a microgrid comprised of a battery and solar array in hope that it will provide back-up power during outages. The practice – known as “islanding” – will employ a battery housed on a concrete foundation in a weatherproof enclosure along with a solar array, all located at the Samish Island Fire Station.

On top of testing the microgrid as a source of back-up power, PSE will also be evaluating other uses like easing the strain on the main grid during peak hours and helping to stabilize the grid.

The battery project is likely to significantly improve local reliability, capable of providing three nearby homes with temporary power during an outage. It will also provide the fire station with power for critical functions in the event of an outage. PSE’s Senior Vice President, Chief Customer and Transformation Officer Aaron August said the new system is a way to support reaching their goal of becoming a Beyond Net Zero energy company by 2045.

“Our customers want a better, cleaner energy future – and so do we,” VP August said in a statement.

A ribbon cutting for the project will be held at the fire station at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5.
