SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Skagit County has modified some of its burn ban restrictions due to increased moisture levels.

The county announced that as of Tuesday, Sept. 1, recreational fires for cooking and pleasure will be permitted with stipulations.

Fires must consist only of charcoal or seasoned firewood and remain in enclosures of at least 14 inches high, with a width under 3 feet. Those lighting fires must do so at least 15 feet from a structure and have a garden hose or a five-gallon bucket of water available.

Recreational fires must also be at least 25 feet from any combustibles, standing timber or overhanging tree branches.

Additionally, a person over the age of 16 must be present to monitor the fire.

The Skagit County Fire Marshall reminds people to check the website for additional burning restrictions before starting fires. Cities within Skagit may operate under a different set of restrictions than the unincorporated county, so checking the Northwest Clean Air Agency’s website can clarify what is currently allowed.

A statewide ban on burning residential yard debris and land clearing will remain in effect until Sept. 30.
