WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Another phase of the I-5 fish passage project will soon be felt south of Bellingham.

WSDOT said that all southbound traffic will move onto a temporary bypass road near Chuckanut Creek starting around 8 p.m. Thursday, June 11. The route uses part of Old Samish Road, which has been closed to through traffic since late April.

Northbound travelers will also move to a temporary two-lane road starting Monday night.

Crews will continue work to remove an old culvert under the freeway and replace it with infrastructure that makes it easier for fish migration.

Construction of permanent Southbound lanes is expected to be complete by September. Old Samish Road likely won’t reopen to through traffic until the end of this year.
