BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – We could see some lightning in our skies going into this weekend.

Slight chance of thunderstorms is expected for our region Friday, June 5 and that chance increases on Saturday, June 6.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle described the incoming storm as a deep low-pressure system with lightning, brief periods of heavy rain and gusty and erratic winds. They added that the storm system is moving south from the Gulf of Alaska to off Washington’s coast.

The North Cascades will be more impacted by the storm Friday, but we’ll likely see more widespread activity as the weekend goes on. Storm activity is more likely through the afternoon on both days. Overall, forecasters predict a 25-35% chance of lightning in our region during this system.

NWS shared some tips for protecting yourself from lightning strikes in light of the forecast:

  • Have alternate ways to receive weather alerts
  • Find a sturdy building or a car with a hard-top roof for shelter
  • Avoid hilltops, tall trees, open fields and water activities
  • Stay inside for 30 minutes after the last thunder strike
