As September brings lingering warm days to Whatcom County, homeowners are looking for ways to stay comfortable while keeping their cooling systems in top shape. Local experts say a few proactive steps can make a big difference in both comfort and efficiency.

Even as evenings cool, daytime temperatures can still climb. Feller Heating & AC, a Bellingham-based heating and cooling company, recommends regular maintenance to ensure systems run smoothly.

“Changing or cleaning air filters once a month is one of the simplest and most effective things homeowners can do,” said Phillip Dye. “Dirty filters restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder and use more energy.”

Other tips include keeping blinds or curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day, using ceiling fans to circulate air and sealing any gaps around windows or doors to prevent cool air from escaping. Homeowners are also encouraged to clear debris from around outdoor condenser units to improve airflow.

Routine professional inspections can also prevent costly breakdowns. Technicians can check refrigerant levels, clean coils and ensure thermostats are working properly before the next hot spell arrives.

Feller Heating & AC notes that September is an ideal time for homeowners to schedule service. “Taking care of your system now can extend its life span and help you avoid surprises during an unseasonably warm week,” the company said.

With a mix of cool nights and warm afternoons expected, local experts say combining good habits with regular HVAC maintenance is the best way to keep Whatcom County homes comfortable this fall.
