WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Whatcom County has named the newest leader of its health department.

Whatcom County announced on Thursday, Aug. 21, that it’s selected Champ Thomaskutty as the next director of Health and Community Services.

“Thomaskutty has the right mix of leadership experience, management expertise, and a deep commitment to public health,” said Executive Sidhu. “I was impressed by his thoughtful, evidence-based approach to problem solving, and it is clear that Champ will be a great asset for our organization and the community we serve.”

Thomaskutty has served as deputy health officer for the Calvert County Health Department in Maryland since 2017.

“I am excited to come to Whatcom County and continue my lifelong mission of improving health outcomes for all,” said Thomaskutty. “I very much look forward to getting to know the department team, community partners and local health leaders. This team has done so much great work, and we have a wonderful opportunity to continue building on those successes.”

My Bellingham Now previously reported that the county fired former director Erika Lautenbach in March.

Lautenbach filed a tort claim last week, seeking $1.5 million over what she calls her wrongful termination.

Since she left, former assistant director Charlene Ramont has served as interim director.

Thomaskutty is expected to take over at the end of October, pending confirmation from the county council.
